Henri Rolin (1891-1973) was a jurist born in Ghent. After the First World War, he became an internationally respected specialist in international law.

He was a senator from 1932 to 1968 and President of the Senate from 1947 to 1949.

From 1939, he was a member of the Permanent Court of Arbitration. As a lawyer, he often acted as counsel before the Permanent Court of International Justice, which later became the International Court of Justice.

He was a member of the Council of Europe from its establishment until 1959. Together with French lawyer and Nobel Prize winner René Cassin, he designed the European Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms signed in Rome on 4 November 1950.

In 1959, he became judge and vice-president at the European Court of Human Rights.
